Practical Simple Marketing In the News
Are you ready? Here's the latest issue of Practical Simple Marketing In The News. These are links and resources shared on Twitter this past month with the tag #practicalmktr and grouped into categories.

I hope you find these resources as exciting as I do. John Cleese on creativity is a gem and I loved the "Outside In" article from Wharton. Pretty cool, too, the growing list of brands and industries successfully experimenting with social media marketing.

If you are interesting in the consumer retail experience, I've been doing something similar on Flooring The Consumer with Retail Experience links #retailexp.

                      MarketingProfs B2B Forum 2010 Recap

MarketingProfs B2B ForumI'm just back from the 2010 MarketingProfs B2B Forum in Boston and am, once again, in awe over the intensity of the experience.

The intensity comes from a confluence of marketing forces.

One: intellectual. Inevitably, MarketingProfs keynote presentations stretch my mind and imagination, have me reconsidering paradigms and dreaming of the impossible. David Weinberger and Mitch Joel both delivered!

Two: practical. MarketingProfs puts together some of the best quality, most relevant and practical case studies and presentations that I've experienced. [Check out the program schedule for this B2B Forum.] They do so consistently. New this year were pre-conference workshops and I had the honor to sit in on Christina (CK) Kerley's session on Integrating social media into your marketing plan to improve ROI. It was outstanding! Patrick Prothe has a terrific writeup in Showing the ROI in Social Media. What I learned at the Marketing Profs B2B Conference.

Three: social. MarketingProfs events offer so many natural opportunities for participants to have meaningful conversations, interact, learn from one another and deepen relationships developed online. I got to spend time with Sharon Mostyn and Donna Tocci, both Twitter friends, finally met Ron Ploof in person [the firetruck in the picture below is what interrupted his fantastic Video Hot Seat Lab session], reconnected with favorite conversationalists such as CK and Allen Weiss, didn't get enough time with Ann Handley, Deirdre Breakenridge, Beth Harte, Lee Odden and Aneta Hall, and also met new friends.

MarketingProfs B2B Forum FiretruckFour: serendipity. I was unexpectedly invited to offer One on One Twitter Therapy on May 4th. I had the time of my life meeting with four B2B Forum attendees and offering perspective, advice and ideas on how best to use Twitter for business. Thank you, Kathy Bushman!

I'll be covering in more detail several of the sessions I attended.

In the meantime, here are a few links that will give you a taste for this event:

+ Definitely read through Ann Handley's recap of the 2010 MarketingProfs B2B Forum: Overheard at the Forum: 30 Lessons for B2B Marketers.

+ Laurie Kinsman writes Why MarketingProfs and #mpb2b need to get their act together*.

+ Peg Mulligan offers MarketingProfs Cinco de Mayo Fiesta: A Case Study on Being Memorable.

+ Christopher S. Penn describes The State of B2B Social Media from MarketingProfs B2B Forum

+ David B. Thomas summarizes B2B case studies in MarketingProfs B2B: Proven Success Stories Integrating Social Media into Overall Strategy.

                      MarketingProfs, you rock!

Practical Social Media Perspective: Links of Note

Chain link detail by PhotoplasiaWhat are your thoughts about social media in 2010? Do you expect increased adoption? How do you see it making sense for your business? I'd love to hear your reactions. Here are a few links of note with a practical social media perspective to get you thinking...

                      Practical Social Media Perspective

If you haven't had a chance to review Valeria Maltoni's Marketing 2010, I suggest you do. The thesis for her ebook is "Social media becomes operational." It includes perspectives from Jason Baer, Olivier Blanchard, Danny Brown, Mark Earls, Rachel Happe, Gavin Heaton, Jackie Huba, Jonathan MacDonald, Amber Naslund, and Shannon Paul.

Joe Pulizzi offers 100 Social Media & Content marketing Predictions for 2010 - which do you find most inspiring?

I love the idea of bagging resolutions and asking customer focused questions instead: Replace those resolutions with questions. Would you add other questions?

Lee Aase is as practical as marketers come. You may remember him from Mayo Clinic's Lee Aase: Simple Marketing In Action. Well, definitely take a look through his 35 Social Media Theses. They will definitely get you thinking about how to apply social media to your marketing.

Now, I do appreciate that Scaling Social Media in 10 Steps mentions the important role that "simplify" has to offer. At the same time, I love how methodical Gahlord Dewald's approach is to making social media practical.

                      What do you think?

Will Montague's bokeh link fenceI have marvelous Links of Note to share with you! They are filled with wisdom and insight on how to make sense of all of these new, digital and social media marketing tools.

Building The B2B Business Case for Social Media Marketing: A 10-Benefit Slide Show for B2B Professionals by CK makes a strong case for businesses to start engaging with customers. She offers numerous resources, including a presentation, to help make the case.

Having a plan is critical to success with social media. Because "the barrier [to entry with social media] is the knowledge of how to use them." Which is why Lisa Barone urges Creating Your Social Media Plan. More specifically,

                      1. Secure Your Brand
                      2. Set Your Metrics
                      3. Know Who You Are
                      4. Determine Where to Build Satellite Communications
                      5. Create Rules for Engagement
                      6. Engage. Genuinely.
                      7. Assess Your Success.

In 7 Things I Learned Online That I Use At Work, Valeria Maltoni details benefits and learnings from the age of conversation...

                      1. Ideas come from anywhere
                      2. Sharing and deciding are not the same thing
                      3. Talking needs to be paired with doing
                      4. Simple does not mean easy [Yes, I like this one!]
                      5. Transparency is key
                      6. The currency of modern business is adaptability
                      7. Sometimes, doing more means accomplishing less.

Olivier Blanchard discusses in this SlideShare the Basics of Social Media ROI. It puts into enterprising perspective what matters for measuring a meaningful return on social media investment.

And, then, two resources relevant to two previous posts:

+ One titled "Social media skills go to the head of the class" from PRWeek discusses the importance of real-life proficiency in social media for both students and teachers. I've just added this to Education & Social Media

+ McLuhan, Socrates and Edith Wharton on Social Media by Joel Postman offers wise perspective from mostly dead authors. I've added this reference to Marketing Effectively During An Information Revolution.

                      What do you think?

Links of Note: Marketing Wisdom & Best-Kept Secrets

frozen light in a snow weekend, MANZANEDA
                      originally uploaded by Paulo Brandão.

I love coming across marketing resources filled with nuggets of practical wisdom and best-kept secrets that help us become smarter and better at what we do.

From Anita Campbell, Publisher of Small Business Trends, comes a gem of a resource:
Best-Kept Marketing Secrets where 100 Experts Dish With Their Marketing Tips by Readers of Small Business Trends, 2008. The listing of contributors reads like a who's who in marketing today and they address topics ranging from relationship marketing, marketing strategy, selling, communicating and messaging, online marketing to social media.

In her overview letter, Anita notes three themes:

+ "Simple and inexpensive tools are more popular than complex or pricey approaches."

+ "Authenticity, friendliness and relationships matter."

+ "Creative online marketing plays a key role."

I suggest you print out the entire 33 page document, highlight what resonates and then refer back to it on a regular basis.

Interestingly, there's now an editor's picks version of the document as announced earlier in June 2009...

Another invaluable resource is Marketing Sherpa's Marketing Wisdom for 2009 [available free] which includes 47 pages of real life lessons and stories broken down into 16 categories: email, web 2.0, search marketing, mobile marketing, landing page and website design, top tests, business-t0-business, lead generation, direct mail, customer service, metrics, advertising, business-t0-consumer, office politics, public relations and video. The letter from the editor highlights three trends: email is not dead; build social networks; and search engine optimization.

The third resource I recommend is Four Steps to Marketing Smarter (and for Less) in Today's Economy by Kimberly Smith. Yes, it's premium content on MarketingProfs, but it's filled with intense wisdom from the likes of Tim Berry, Seth Godin, David Meerman Scott, Bryan Eisenberg and Jonathan Salem Baskin!

                      Here are the four steps:
                      1. Get back to basics
                      2. Let the data be your light
                      3. Take the high road
                      4. Go social.

Now, go read the rest of the article.

What other sources of valuable marketing wisdom and best-kept secrets have you come across?

Links of Note: Practical Marketing Lessons

rusty chain originally uploaded by shoothead.
As I've started doing at Flooring The Consumer, I'm sharing here Links of Note to other blog posts about marketing - simple, practical and relevant marketing - that I consider noteworthy and thought provoking.

Topping the list is a post from Paula Drum [whom I featured in CMO 2.0 Conversation with Paula Drum, H&R Block]. I came across it first on PR-Squared in 10 Tips for Social Media Marketers [and the original post on Paula Drum's Positively Paula Blog]. It's a must read particularly for marketers trying to make sense of social media and echoes my feelings about marketing with social media.

                      Paula's 10 tips include:
                      1. Every brand can and should be 'social'
                      2.Just get started.
                      3. Integrated marketing vs. social media
                      4. Find your brand's own path
                      5. Media $ versus human capital
                      6. Agencies play a great role, but the voice needs to be the company's
                      7. Your agency needs to walk the walk
                      8. Get legal involved early
                      9. Have a crisis management plan
                      10. Selling the C-Suite or ROI

Be sure to watch the Shift Happens video, too. I've seen it several times and, each time, it reminds me that these truly are remarkable times.

Next, Chris Abraham writes in Marketing Conversation that Social Media Marketing Spooks Brands, pointing to Tom Smith's Why Big Brands Struggle With Social Media. You'll note similarities to Drum's points.

Finally, one of my very favorite marketers, CK, writes this wonderful article on the MarketingProfs Daily Fix: What Marketers Can Learn from the Frozen Food Aisle. As she usually does, CK captures my attention and has me re-appreciating not just frozen food, but marketing. Her key takeaways:

+ Make the commitment to monitor.
+ Recognize others when they recognize you.
+ Syndicate In, not just Out.
+ Customize promotions in real time.
+ Understand that communities are formed around anything - yes, even frozen foods.
+ Think outside of the [frozen food] box.

What do you think of these practical marketing lessons? How might you apply them to your business?
